Plaid 3 Ways

December 6, 2018

I love all the plaid that I have been seeing lately and was particularly inspired to search out some pieces for myself after  Vintage Splendor posted about her vintage skort on instagram. By the end of my plaid binge, I had a few pieces and had planned on doing a post about wearing plaid in general but then this skirt took over as I found myself styling it multiple ways. This wool skirt still had tags on it that looked to be from the 70’s and had a listed price of $118. I bought it for $20 including shipping.

For the first look I went with something classic. This puff shouldered, boucle cowl neck sweater came from Capture Boutique and is one of my favorites. I sometimes like to wear a broach pinned on the neck but this time I chose to pin this little fox broach with ruby eyes and a rhinestone tail on my black wool beret. I added a pair of Vince Camuto leopard print calf hair pumps to add another pattern and a vintage cowhide purse that my sister bought for me in a vintage shop in Portland, OR. All of these pieces had a great mix of texture which helps to elevate a look.

For the second look I threw in everything but the kitchen sink. It ended up a little Clueless meets The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. I love the contrast of wearing very spring like colors in the fall and therefore chose a kind of neon lime green/citrine Cremieux sweater that I’ve had for a couple of years. I loved how the citrine color bought out some of the yellow colors in the skirt. For warmth, cause I’m all about being practical too, I wore an olive J Crew turtleneck underneath and a golden chestnut faux fur cropped jacket from Forever 21 on top. It had a rip in the lining and I got it half off. And no, I never fixed the rip because I am trash. Ha! To further add to the crazy, (cause why stop now?) I wore some J Crew teal lurex socks with my clear Miu Miu clear heels. And because I love looking like an out of place easter egg I threw on a pink striped scarf and vintage robin’s egg blue hoop earrings. I topped it off with a multicolor beaded pill box hat that I bought at Bambi Deville’s in New Orleans.

Lastly, I wanted to take the skirt into a more grunge look. I picked out my Blondie t-shirt that I bought at Kulture Vulture in New Orleans but any band or vintage t-shirt would work as well. I added my trusty Zara navy mesh dress over the shirt but under my skirt to create some layering and winterize the look a bit more. For added warmth I threw on this Belle Vere studded faux leather jacket that I found at TJ Maxx. Not only is it warm but it weighs about 20 lbs, so you will more than likely warm up just by wearing it! I added a J Crew chain necklace that gave a glamorous nod to grunge by being half-brushed brass and the other half rhinestones. And last but not least, because no grunge look is complete without a pair of Doc Martens, I threw on my pair of Clemencys.  These shoes have a little bit more of a heel than the OG style while still being very comfortable.

And there you have it! I hope you enjoy these looks as much as I do and hopefully I gave you a few ideas. Thank you for stopping by!
